God General, avatar of Necrozma; this Zev guy seemed pretty high up there as far as Rocket's hierarchy was concerned. Rhea didn't feel like she had to impress the guy, necessarily, but she (probably like many others) was incredibly curious to know what this one man army was like. What could she learn from a man with the power of the yawning void at his fingertips? What insight could she gain from someone who could snuff out life with such ease? [break][break]

These questions were ones she hoped to answer in due time, but for now, she had more pressing matters to attend to. In an instant, the simulation shimmered to life and Rhea found herself in the middle of a high-speed chase, [break][break]

“Piss and shit!” she exclaimed angrily as her Cyclizar narrowly avoided a TECHNO BLAST, “Persistent bastards, aren't they?” [break][break]

At least the view was nice on this dark highway bathed in bright neon blues and pinks. The stars above had been lost long ago to the light pollution of the city, but that suited Rhea just fine. The only lights they needed to see by were the ones they made for themselves, she reasoned, as another TECHNO BLAST exploded nearby with all the bombastic force of Unovan fireworks.

Though preparing for the upcoming conquest was a high priority, Team Rocket's science department was also making headway with the RKS machine. Naomi Sato was certain that they could learn more about the DRK Triad with it. Therefore, Zev checked in periodically, participating when he had the free time. [break][break]

The first scenario after plugging in to the machine was familiar to him, though he'd only experienced it once before. His Cyclizar swerved hard, avoiding a TECHNO BLAST that blasted the asphalt where they had been moments before. [break][break]

Clutching onto the Pokémon, Zev scanned the highway ahead for any off-ramps but found none. He swore under his breath, then looked over his shoulder at Rhea Armistead. [break][break]

"Lose them in the traffic!" he yelled over the wind and the noise. "Then we'll take the first exit we come across and get our bearings!" [break][break]

In midst your chase, a transport truck crashes and overturns. From its cargo, crate after crate of robotic Pokemon break upon impacting the ground. There is a brand on the truck's side which reads: ANTHEIL.[break][break]

One robot stands out above the rest. A juggernaut of metal on tank-like treads begins to fire all kinds of attacks from its arsenal, targeting both you and Genesect alike.[break][break]

Rhea swerved away from Zev, charging into a packed lane of futuristic cars. There was precious little space to be found between the vehicles, but the mercenary and her Cyclizar managed to scrabble their way through regardless, all the while ducking and dodging and weaving to evade their insectoid pursuers. [break][break]

And this strategy seemed to be working out quite well, too, until one of those TECHNO BLASTs missed her by a mile and instead collided with a massive transport truck. Her draconic ride came screeching to a stop, sliding against asphalt as crate after crate crashed against the ground, and it was only when crunching metal turned to the sound of something scraping and screeching that Rhea discovered the most prized bit of cargo the truck had been hauling, [break][break]

“What in the absolute fuck?”[break][break]

It looked like a prop out of one of those Johtonian superhero shows with terrible Unovan localization. The mechanical monstrosity began to fire aimlessly toward them, pinging Genesects out of the sky above them even as it struck cars and other vehicles all around them, [break][break]

“Get out of the fuckin' way!” [break][break]

Rhea tossed a Poke Ball and sent the newly emerged Ceruledge on a FLAME-ing CHARGE toward the horrific construct, [break][break]

“Or I'll smash you to fuckin' bits!”

Zev lost Rhea in the traffic early on, so preoccupied was he in maneuvering between lanes of bumper-to-bumper cars. He caught sight of her again only when the transport truck exploded from an errant TECHNO BLAST, forcing his Cyclizar to come to a halt alongside hers. [break][break]

The robot that emerged from the spilled cargo was unlike any object or Pokémon Zev had ever seen before. Not that it mattered. As soon as it started firing attacks at everything that moved, he could only react. He threw a Pokéball, summoning his Charizard with a flash of light. [break][break]

"Take that thing down!" Zev roared. [break][break]

The winged lizard launched herself into the air, aiming a FLAMETHROWER at the metal monstrosity. [break][break]

The shift to the next scenario was jarring in its suddenness. In one moment, the smell of acrid smoke and the sound of clanging metal swelled through the air, a scene of complete sensory overload even to the merc. But in the next, Rhea found herself breathing in lungfuls of fresh mountain air and standing on the sidelines of some scene in Hoenn's history she was largely unfamiliar with. [break][break]

She was vaguely familiar with some of its players, though. Fernando Silph, league councilman and CEO of what was arguably one of the biggest corporations in the region. Kyle Lopez, a dead champion in a long line of other dead Hoennian champions. Silas Blackwell, a weak link in an organization that demanded excellence. Rhea quickly glanced from Zev to Silas to Fernando and back again, [break][break]

“I suppose we're nicking the Wish Tag, then?” [break][break]

An important relic, even if it likely wouldn't be leaving the simulation with them, [break][break]

“Or else we kill the bastard for a second time.” [break][break]

Her Ceruledge's eyes narrowed as he surveyed the scene before them. Cain's BITTER BLADE would strike down Silas just as quickly as his ALLY SWITCH would secure the Wish Tag. Either way, both woman and Pokemon understood their places; a weapon did not choose who to strike, and it merely swung whichever way its wielder bade it.

When the scenario shifted, Zev took a moment to orient himself. His Charizard ceased her flight and landed on the soft grass beside him. Taking in the scene, he realized what it was: a well-known moment in Hoenn's history. [break][break]

"We know what happens when Silas falls," Zev said to Rhea. It was their first proper conversation beyond a brief introduction before the simulation began. "Because of the nature of the RKS machine, it'd be smarter for us to see what happens in an alternate timeline." [break][break]

The grunt's Ceruledge was the better option for stealing the Wish Tag, so Zev gestured for his Charizard to wait and prepare a defense. [break][break]

"You're new to Hoenn. How much do you know of the anomalies and disasters that plague the region?" he asked. [break][break]

However, with great power comes greater sacrifice. In order to bend the scenario to your whims, you use the WISH TAG to conjure power for yourself. In the process, you must lose something. After all, this Jirachi was woken prematurely. Its wishes made corrupt.[break][break]

End the scenario in your way. Whether it means Verdanturf Town is destroyed and Rocket prevails, or another outcome of your choice.

“Consider it done.” Rhea nodded toward Cain, “Would you kindly fetch us our prize?” [break][break]

The Ceruledge acted upon the orders in an instant. One moment he was at Rhea's side; in the next, he had swapped places with some unrecognizable redhead. None of the actors on this stage could have anticipated the sudden arrival of the Ghost, preoccupied as they were with one of many violent clashes in the region's history, and none of them would have time to react as the Ceruledge snatched the Wish Tag from Sliph's hand and ALLY SWITCHed his way back to his trainer's side. [break][break]

Zev's voice came again before the Jirachi's did, echoing in her mind, but Rhea swore that for a singular moment, there was some sort of discordant overlapping between the two. She grimaced a little as she tried to focus on the God General's question, [break][break]

“Enough, I should hope.” [break][break]

Before them, the Jirachi materialized in the flesh, peering at them with one piercing, bloodshot eye in the center of its chest, [break][break]

“Enough to know that they might grant us immeasurable power. Enough to know that they might be the death of us all.” [break][break]

And perhaps that proved to be a sufficient enough answer for the star-born creature as the world suddenly shuddered beneath them under the weight of this impossible future of unspeakable strength and violent bloodshed she sought to create. [break][break]

Distantly, Rhea became aware of the smell of smoldering embers and rain and ozone on the wind. The players on this stage watched her with mute horror as the ground cracked and rumbled beneath them, splitting apart at the seams and devouring fallen Pokemon and human combatants alike. Rocket would not take Verdanturf undamaged; Jirachi demanded a toll to be paid for its DOOM DESIRE, and it would be paid for in rubble and blood.

Zev watched with stoic indifference as Jirachi's DOOM DESIRE engulfed Verdanturf, turning it into a field of blood and ash. Somewhere out there, this version of events had transpired instead, he knew, and on some branching strand existed a universe where Silas Blackwell lived. [break][break]

"Exactly. That's the kind of double-edged sword we're wielding here," Zev said, recalling Rhea's file that mentioned her expertise with the blade. "So we need to seize and control what we can before they are used against us." [break][break]

He tilted his head at the Wish Tag still in Rhea's hands to emphasize his point. [break][break]

"Resources, data, Pokémon." [break][break]

The burning town around them began to dissolve at the edges, morphing into the next scenario.

It was a simple and straightforward bit of logic that Rhea could appreciate. Scarcity of resources had been the driving force of conflict for time immemorial; it was the primitive force that drove Pyroar to hunt and men to war. She tried to keep hold of her own scarce resource as the scene dissolved into the next, but just like Verdanturf, the Wish Tag burned away to ash in the palm of her hand. [break][break]

And so they entered the final scenario. A much more lively affair than the previous, Rhea noted with some growing delight, but she stamped down that little bit of joy as she eyed the painted masks all around them. Now was not the time for fun – now was the time for her to find the next thing to take. [break][break]

As it so happened, that thing found them. Rhea felt something collide against her shin with some force, and when she suddenly looked down there was a... child, standing before her? It was some sort of small figure, that much was certain, wearing a particularly unusual mask, [break][break]

“Well, hello there.” [break][break]

Rhea squatted down to put herself at eye level with the green-cloaked stranger, wearing a (somewhat forced) smile of warm comfort, [break][break]

“Nice mask. Mind if I take a peek at it?” [break][break]

Slowly, carefully, she reached out to touch the grinning green mask the festival-goer wore. Information was just another blade in Rocket's arsenal, and another prize for the taking.

Though Rhea did not seem to recognize the child-like figure, Zev did. Memories of a darkened chamber, sticky with mochi and rot, flashed in the fore of his mind. A violent, brutal encounter with the very Pokémon that stood in front of them. Cold showers. Scalding showers. A fleshy, choking chain around his neck. [break][break]

Unspeakable hatred. Immeasurable wrath. [break][break]

Though Rhea's hand was already stretched out to take the mask, Zev crossed the distance separating him from Ogerpon and wrenched the glittering mask off himself. He gazed with cold cruelty upon the face of the pathetic creature. [break][break]
